Abstract:	摘要： ⬢We aim to understand how a patent⬢s citation of scientific publications (i.e., scientific linkage) affects the patent-owning firm⬢s productivity.⬢Panel data on a sample of electronic firms in Taiwan are used for the empirical analysis.⬢Unobserved factors affecting a firm⬢s scientific linkage and its productivity are controlled for by using the instrumental variable approach.⬢The findings indicate that scientific linkage raises a firm⬢s productivity.⬢Our findings imply that there is a need for government intervention to facilitate the translation of scientific discoveries to technological innovations. Using a panel of electronics firms listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, this paper explores the spillover of scientific research to the private sector by looking at the impact of the intensity a patent⬢s backward citation of scientific publications relative to citation of other patents on the patent-owning firm⬢s productivity. To identify the causal effect, we use measures of a firm⬢s financial constraints as instrumental variables to account for the potential endogeneity of scientific citation intensity of a patent.
