Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Augmented Reality (AR) have become important technologies in the digital transformation of the construction industry. BIM can integrate architectural, structural, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) information into a comprehensive digital model, thereby improving information integration during the design, construction, and management stages. However, in practical applications, on-site personnel still need to interpret model information through two-dimensional drawings or computer interfaces. Differences in professional backgrounds may lead to information gaps, which further affect communication efficiency and decision-making quality on construction sites. In contrast, AR technology can overlay virtual models onto the physical environment in real time, providing an intuitive and immediate method for spatial information visualization. Therefore, AR has the potential to improve construction site communication and coordination.
This study focuses on the integrated application of BIM and AR and explores its feasibility and practical benefits in construction site communication. First, BIM models were developed using Autodesk Revit, followed by model lightweighting and format conversion procedures to enable their use on the Trimble Connect AR platform. Second, field application tests were conducted to verify the overlay performance between BIM models and the physical site environment, and to examine their applications in construction inspection, MEP pipeline checking, and on-site coordination. Finally, questionnaires, expert interviews, and Large Language Model (LLM)-assisted analysis were used to collect and summarize construction professionals’ opinions regarding the acceptance, application needs, and implementation limitations of BIM-AR technology.
The results indicate that BIM can serve as a fundamental platform for construction site information integration and construction management, while AR can further enhance the visualization of model information and improve on-site communication efficiency. The questionnaire and interview results show that most respondents agreed that the integration of BIM and AR can help reduce construction errors, improve cross-disciplinary coordination, and enhance the ability to identify on-site problems. The LLM-assisted analysis also summarized several key issues from the expert interviews, including improvement of on-site communication, reduction of construction errors, demand for training, and limitations related to positioning accuracy. Nevertheless, equipment costs, model maintenance workload,

positioning accuracy, and user training remain the major challenges for implementing BIM and AR technologies on construction sites.
Based on the research findings, this study proposes a BIM-AR on-site application workflow and implementation recommendations suitable for the current conditions of Taiwan’s construction industry. The results verify the potential of BIM and AR integration in construction site communication and construction management. This study may serve as a reference for future development in digital construction management, Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), and smart construction sites.
