;In response to the global and national "2050 Net Zero" emissions goals, this study evaluates the carbon reduction benefits and structural performance of using pozzolanic mineral admixtures in high-strength flexural concrete for the Terminal 3 project at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. The project is of significant scale, encompassing a total pavement area of 423,111 m2 and requiring 168,348 m3 of flexural concrete with a design strength of 50 kgf/cm2 (approx. 700 psi). The research methodology integrates literature review, carbon footprint calculations based on ISO 14067:2018, and on-site non-destructive testing. The study demonstrates that replacing 25.06% of traditional Type II Portland cement with pozzolanic materials (slag and fly ash) not only enhances the concrete′s microstructure and long-term durability through secondary hydration but also significantly mitigates carbon emissions. Key research findings include: 1. Significant Carbon Reduction: Quantitative analysis reveals a total reduction of approximately 18,908 metric tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e), representing a 27.58% decrease compared to pure cement mixtures. This reduction is equivalent to the annual carbon sequestration of 73.3 Daan Forest Parks. 2. Superior Structural Performance: Evaluation via Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD) and FAARFIELD 2.1 software indicates that the new apron achieved a Pavement Classification Rating (PCR) of 1,140 R/C/W/T. This exceeds the requirements for critical aircraft such as the B747-8, proving that low-carbon concrete mixes fully satisfy the operational safety standards for large wide-body aircraft. 3. International Recognition: The project’s outcomes were honored with the "2025 ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Award," confirming Taiwan′s international competitiveness in green construction and digital twin monitoring technologies.
