;Discussing Current Affairs, Reflecting on History, and Sentimental Fiction:
Minquan Daily and the Formation of the Shanghai Cultural Sphere (1912-1924)

    Abstract

This dissertation examines Minquan Daily as a key newspaper of the early Republican period. Inheriting the legacy of the late Qing press, the newspaper engaged with current political affairs, revisited historical narratives, and expressed the emotional experiences of contemporary youth, thereby contributing to the formation of a new Shanghai cultural sphere. Through its political commentaries, Minquan Daily reflected the emergence of modern Chinese political thought. Its historical essays combined the traditional literati approach to historiography with modern critical perspectives, encouraging both historical inquiry and revisionist reinterpretations. Alongside these discussions of politics and history, the newspaper serialized sentimental fiction that foregrounded the emotional and moral lives of young men and women. The works of Xu Zhenya and other writers, written in traditional literary forms yet infused with new emotional sensibilities, inaugurated a new phase in the development of Chinese romance fiction. The cultural influence of Minquan Daily further extended through related publications, including Minquan Illustrated, Xiaoshuo Congbao (Fiction Magazine), Xiaoshuo Xinbao (New Fiction News), and Xiaoshuo Ribao (Fiction Daily). Between 1912 and 1924, this network of intellectuals cultivated periodicals, generated public discourse, and promoted sentimental fiction within the Shanghai cultural sphere, creating a literary marketplace that reached beyond Shanghai to Southeast Asia.
This dissertation argues that Minquan Daily can be understood through three interconnected dimensions. First, Zhou Hao′s journalistic career and editorial practices demonstrate how the newspaper consciously established its political position. Through its selection of news events and active engagement in public debate, Minquan Daily participated in the construction of public opinion and created a distinctive discursive space. Dai Jitao′s writings on Southeast Asia incorporated overseas observations, issues concerning Chinese migrant communities, and nationalist imagination into the newspaper′s discourse, extending its cultural influence beyond China and forming a transregional intellectual network. Second, the genre of congtan xiaoyu (informal essays and miscellaneous commentaries) inherited earlier literary traditions while assuming new functions in disseminating knowledge, mobilizing public sentiment, and reinterpreting history. Third, the serialization of Xu Zhenya′s Yulihun (The Soul of the Jade Pear), together with the numerous imitative works it inspired, established the principal current of the Mandarin Ducks and Butterflies School. Their emotional appeal, narrative techniques, and commercial promotional strategies became defining features of early Republican popular literature and played an important role in shaping the cultural marketplace.
The newspaper′s editorial organization and the long-term collaboration among its contributors continuously fostered new literary communities, while literary schools developed through networks of periodical publication. From the Shanghai cultural sphere, Yulihun spread throughout Southeast Asia, where its film adaptation exemplified the cross-media reproduction of literature. Its translations and adaptations in Vietnam further contributed to the development of modern Vietnamese literary language.
By examining Minquan Daily, this dissertation reconstructs the Shanghai cultural sphere of the early Republican period and demonstrates how journalism, literature, and transnational cultural exchange collectively shaped the intellectual, literary, and cultural landscape of modern China.
