;In this study, a new energy dissipation device, namely wave damper, was introduced and investigated for seismic performance enhancement. The novel device was designed using a series of tapered steel plate arcs operating in a specialized load transmission mechanism to achieve symmetrical flexural response while simultaneously optimize damper strength and energy dissipation efficiency within limited dimension. Experimental investigations were conducted on the wave damper at the member and system levels, using a series of cyclic loading tests. Analytical expressions for wave damper yielding characteristics and tapered profile were derived and effectively validated by the test results. Structure performance enhancement was further investigated by nonlinear time-history analyses on multi-bay multi-story buildings using various earthquake ground motions. The experimental investigation on wave damper showed that early yielding, significant strength and effective energy dissipation density, symmetric hysteretic behavior with effective damping were simultaneously achieved in the proposed device. Dampers with larger depth and thickness, or smaller eccentricity would incur higher strength and energy dissipation. The frame test results showed that significant improvement in strength, energy dissipation and equivalent viscous damping were achieved when wave dampers were adopted, effectively controlling the structure deformations. The nonlinear time-history analysis results revealed that maximum roof displacement of braced structures was found to remain lower and decayed faster to achieve earlier stabilization, compared with those of SMFs. Braced frame maximum story drifts and residual drifts were substantially reduced from those of SMFs with reasonable increment in base shear. The achieved results justified the proposed device feasibility in seismic design and structural performance upgrading.
