;Conventional tuned mass dampers (TMDs) have been widely adopted for mitigating structural vibrations induced by earthquakes and other dynamic excitations. However, their vibration control performance is often constrained by the required auxiliary mass, making practical implementation difficult in structures with limited installation space or strict weight restrictions. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes an Electromagnetic Inerter-based Tuned Mass Damper (EMI-TMD), which integrates an Electromagnetic Inerter Damper (EMID) with a traditional TMD. By incorporating the inerter mechanism, electromagnetic damping, and energy harvesting capability, the proposed system simultaneously enhances vibration mitigation and enables the recovery of vibration energy.
First, a theoretical model of the EMID is established by deriving the equivalent inertance, electromagnetic damping, and electromechanical energy conversion characteristics. Based on these formulations, a three-degree-of-freedom dynamic model of the coupled EMI-TMD structural system is developed. The H₂ norm is adopted as the optimization criterion to determine the optimal design parameters of EMI-TMD under different structural inherent damping ratios and auxiliary mass ratios.
The effectiveness of the proposed EMI-TMD is evaluated through frequency-domain analysis, harmonic excitation, and seismic time-history simulations. Furthermore, the influences of different mass ratios on structural displacement, acceleration, RMS responses, hysteretic behavior, and energy dissipation are systematically investigated. The electromagnetic power generation and energy conversion efficiency of the EMID are also analyzed to evaluate the energy harvesting performance.
The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed EMI-TMD effectively suppresses both structural displacement and acceleration under harmonic and seismic excitations. Increasing the auxiliary mass ratio generally improves the vibration mitigation performance, while the optimized design achieves a favorable balance between structural control effectiveness and practical implementation. In addition, the hysteretic responses indicate enhanced energy dissipation capability as the mass ratio increases.
Overall, the proposed EMI-TMD not only provides superior vibration mitigation compared with conventional TMD systems but also possesses the capability of vibration energy harvesting. These characteristics make the proposed system a promising passive control device for future smart structures and sustainable structural vibration control applications.
