;With the advancement of the chemical industry, factories frequently discharge organic solvents such as 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) into rivers. Due to their high biotoxicity and resistance to degradation, the remediation of these organic pollutants has garnered significant attention. Polyethersulfone (PES) is major material for membrane application because of its excellent thermal tolerance and chemical resistance. This study is aimed to fabricate PES membrane composites, like graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide(rGO), for removing 4-CP at its original pH of 6.3. Subsequently, we adjusted the p-chlorophenol to pH 5 and pH 9, respectively, to investigate the impact of altered pH on filtration efficacy. Phenol and hydroquinone were also studied to compare the influence of molecular structure on separation behavior. Graphene oxide and its derivatives contain abundant aromatic ring contributing strong π-π interaction with phenolic compounds, enhancing membrane performance. The removal efficiencies of 4-CP reached 82.50% and 80.05% for PES/GO and PES/rGO membranes, respectively. Increasing the additive content led to a denser membrane structure and improved rejection. For instance, PES/GO (0.5%) showed a removal efficiency about 25% higher than that of pristine PES. Adsorption experiments further confirmed that GO-based membranes exhibited higher adsorption capacity due to oxygen-containing functional groups and aromatic structures. Additionally, pH variation influenced electrostatic interactions between pollutants and the membrane surface, affecting adsorption behavior, rejection, and water flux. Overall, the results demonstrate that adsorption and size exclusion jointly govern the separation process, and GO incorporation effectively enhances membrane performance under different pH conditions.
