(Area Under the Curve, AUC)
;The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different auditory environments on participants′ attention and emotional states. In daily life, environmental noise is considered one of the major factors that interferes with cognitive performance. Therefore, this study employed different background sound conditions as auditory stimuli to examine their influence on attention. The experimental conditions included environmental noise, silence, a combination of noise and soothing music (hereafter referred to as the mixed sound condition), slow-tempo orchestral music, and fast-tempo orchestral music. The effects of these sound environments on participants′ relaxation and concentration were evaluated.
The experimental protocol consisted of two tasks: an eyes-closed resting session and a concentration game. Electroencephalography (EEG) was used to record brain activity, and the Hilbert–Huang Transform (HHT) was applied to extract the power of the alpha (α), beta (β), and gamma (γ) frequency bands to quantify participants′ psychological states and levels of attention. After completing each sound condition, participants completed a subjective questionnaire to evaluate their preferences, perceived comfort, and self-reported concentration under each auditory environment.
Subsequently, two types of analyses were performed using the extracted EEG band power. First, the ratio of high-frequency to low-frequency EEG activity was calculated as the arousal rate. Second, Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and the Area Under the Curve (AUC) were employed to establish a binary classification index for evaluating attention under different auditory conditions.
The results indicated that participants subjectively perceived the silence condition as the most effective for enhancing concentration compared with the other sound conditions. In contrast, fast-tempo orchestral music was reported to have the greatest influence on emotional state. The noise condition exhibited the lowest AUC values among all conditions, suggesting that participants′ brains remained in a relatively higher state of activation during the resting task. Nearly half of the participants also showed the highest arousal rate during the noise condition compared with the other resting conditions. However, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed no statistically significant differences among the five sound conditions. The mixed sound condition produced the highest AUC value, indicating that the addition of soothing music to environmental noise reduced beta-band activity during rest. The slow-tempo orchestral music condition achieved the second-highest AUC value, and participants subjectively reported that it effectively promoted physical and mental relaxation, with some participants even perceiving it as more relaxing than the silence condition.
