;Hydrogen is a clean, zero-carbon-emission energy carrier, but its high storage and transportation costs limit its widespread adoption. Ammonia, possessing excellent volumetric hydrogen density and mild liquefaction conditions, serves as a highly promising medium for hydrogen transport. Proton Ceramic Fuel Cells (PCFCs) can directly perform ammonia decomposition and electrochemical oxidation at the anode. Furthermore, water is generated at the cathode without diluting the fuel, yielding a theoretical efficiency superior to traditional oxygen-ion-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). This makes PCFCs an ideal platform for direct ammonia power generation. However, the insufficient ammonia decomposition activity of existing Ni-based anodes at low-to-intermediate temperatures restricts their development. In this study, an infiltration method combined with pulsed-laser metal-salt processing (PLMS) was employed to in-situ synthesize a series of highly dispersed Fe-Co-Ni transition metal alloy catalysts on BaCe0.7Zr0.1Y0.1Yb0.1O3−δ (BCZYYb) anode substrates. The effects of catalyst loading and composition on ammonia decomposition activity and cell performance were investigated. Regarding catalytic activity for ammonia decomposition, optimization established 2.5 wt% as the ideal loading amount. In the composition comparison, Fe3Co3Ni94-BCZYYb exhibited the best activity, reaching 99.8% conversion at 575 °C, making it the earliest among all compositions to approach complete conversion. This remarkable activity is speculated to be due to the introduction of minor amounts of Fe and Co, which achieves a favorable balance between modulating surface adsorption characteristics and preserving the continuous active network of Ni. In terms of single-cell performance, both the maximum power density (MPD) and impedance behavior of Fe3Co3Ni94-BCZYYb outperformed the unmodified Ni-BCZYYb. Under ammonia fuel at 700 °C, it reached a peak power density of 1319 mW cm-2 (compared to 808 mW cm-2 for Ni-BCZYYb). Furthermore, owing to its superior ammonia decomposition activity, it maintained a higher hydrogen supply and power output at low-to-intermediate temperatures, its MPD at 525 °C (424 mW cm-2) was approximately 1.5 times that of Ni-BCZYYb (284 mW cm-2). In a 12-hour stability test under ammonia fuel at 550 °C, its voltage degradation rate was approximately 8.6%, lower than the 13.6% of the unmodified cell, demonstrating that the modified cell possesses both superior ammonia-fueled performance and operational stability. By synthesizing highly dispersed Fe-Co-Ni alloy catalysts in situ via the impregnation-PLMS route, this study clarifies the effects of catalyst loading and composition on ammonia decomposition activity and cell performance, providing a basis for the anode design of direct ammonia-fueled PCFCs. This strategy is expected to promote the practical application of ammonia as a carbon-free hydrogen carrier and to contribute to clean energy conversion and sustainable resource utilization.
