The global financial industry is facing a wave of transition toward digital channels, prompting commercial banks to allocate substantial computer software budgets to foster the innovative development of Financial Technology (FinTech). However, whether massive digital capital investments merely devolve into a "quantity arms race" of formal patents, or if they can substantively drive technological "quality" and "technological activation efficiency," remains a resource allocation black box that urgently needs to be unlocked in current financial practices. Grounded in the Resource-Based View (RBV), this study focuses on commercial banks in Taiwan, utilizing panel data from 2013 to 2024. By employing Panel Least Squares regression and a stratified sampling strategy, this research explores the multi-level transformation path from digital maturity to innovation performance. The empirical results show that the three major hypotheses of this study are significantly supported: First, digital capital investment (MAT) exerts a highly significant positive driving effect on the number of patent applications (PAT). Second, digital investment can positively optimize future patent citations (CIT), proving that software capital can effectively maintain the quality of innovative technologies and break the myth of mere quantitative expansion. Third, within the sub-sample demonstrating actual patent performance, this study reveals a "Size Paradox"—that is, an excessively large asset size negatively dilutes technological activation efficiency (EFF). Nevertheless, digital investment not only positively optimizes this efficiency, but the status of being affiliated with a Financial Holding Company (FHC) also exerts a profound synergy of cross-subsidiary resource integration and internal control during the technology activation phase. The findings of this study not only enrich the academic literature on intangible asset transformation but also provide concrete and scientific strategic guidance for digital project managers (PMs) in financial institutions and regulatory authorities in evaluating the effectiveness of digital transformation.
