;This study investigates the impact of changes in the Volatility Index (VIX) on the returns of different types of Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) in Taiwan. Using 1,850 daily observations from June 2018 to December 2025, ETFs are classified into four categories: market-capitalization, income-oriented, industry, and strategy ETFs. The study employs Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression and incorporates the Fama-French Five-Factor Model and the Carhart momentum factor as control variables. The results show that the linear effect of VIX changes on ETF returns is largely absorbed by systematic market risk factors. However, significant asymmetric effects are identified. When market fear increases, some ETFs exhibit contrarian buying behavior rather than panic selling. Furthermore, under extreme fear conditions, most ETFs demonstrate defensive characteristics, particularly bond ETFs, while financial-sector ETFs remain relatively vulnerable.Overall, the findings suggest that the relationship between VIX and Taiwan ETF returns is asymmetric and dependent on market conditions rather than purely linear. The results provide useful implications for asset allocation and risk management.
