;With the rapid development of digital technologies, process automation has become a key approach for banks to promote digital transformation, enabling improvements in highly repetitive and rule-based operational processes, enhancing efficiency, and reducing human errors. However, most existing digital maturity models primarily focus on measuring the overall level of digitalization, while providing limited support for assessing specific process domains and their degree of institutionalization. Therefore, this study aims to develop a capability model for evaluating process automation integration in the context of banking digital transformation, addressing the limitations of existing models. This study is grounded in the capability level concept of Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) and focuses on “process automation integration” as a specific process area. Based on this foundation, the Banking Process Automation Integration Capability Model (BPAI-CM) is developed to assess the execution and institutionalization of process automation. A commercial bank is employed as a demonstration case, and the SCAMPI appraisal method is applied to evaluate its capability level. The results indicate that BPAI-CM enables banks to systematically examine the current state of process automation and identify key improvement areas in transitioning from project-oriented implementation to institutionalized management. This study contributes by shifting the focus of digital transformation assessment from overall maturity to capability evaluation at the level of specific process domains, thereby addressing the limitations of existing digital maturity models in process-level operationalization and institutionalization, and providing a structured and practical framework for evaluation and continuous improvement.
