;Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are difficult to degrade in the environment due to their stable carbon–fluorine bonds, and they may enter aquatic environments through industrial wastewater treatment plant effluents, posing long-term pollution risks. In this study, asymmetric capacitive deionization (ACDI) was applied to remove PFAS from water, using activated carbon as the electrode material. The effects of different CDI configurations, operating parameters, and real wastewater matrices on PFAS removal were investigated. The results showed that ACDI exhibited better PFOA removal performance than conventional CDI and MCDI in 100 ppb PFOA solutions. Under the condition without background ions, ACDI achieved more than 96% PFOA removal. After adding NaCl to simulate the conductivity of real effluent, ACDI still maintained a removal efficiency of 83%, which was higher than MCDI (60%) and CDI (48%). Overall, the experimental results indicate that the ACDI system showed better performance in terms of both removal efficiency and energy consumption. For the operating parameters, 1.2 V was found to be the preferred operating voltage in this study, with a PFOA removal efficiency of 91%. The flow rate showed limited influence within the range of 50–100 mL/min. Increasing electrode thickness provided only limited improvement in removal efficiency, whereas increasing the number of electrode pairs effectively enhanced PFOA removal. With four electrode pairs, the PFOA removal efficiency reached 98%. In addition, PFOA maintained high removal efficiencies of 89%–94% at 100 ppb in pure water, while the removal efficiency of PFHxS was slightly lower than that of PFOA, reaching 69% at 100 ppb. Tests with real effluents showed that coexisting ions, organic matter, and metal species in domestic, textile, and electroplating effluents affected PFAS removal by ACDI, resulting in lower removal efficiencies than those observed in pure water. Overall, ACDI was more suitable for PFAS removal than conventional CDI and MCDI, especially under water conditions containing background ions. However, real wastewater matrices still affected system performance. Therefore, electrode stability, regeneration efficiency, and the subsequent treatment of concentrated brine should be further evaluated in future studies.
