;Heat-sensitive particulate materials, such as fruits, vegetables, and pharmaceuticals, are often subject to nutrient loss and structural damage caused by elevated temperatures during conventional drying processes. In this context, the present study employs a vibrated spouted bed as the drying apparatus, operating at near-ambient temperature without additional heating in order to minimize thermally induced effects, with particular emphasis on the influence of the flow field and vibration effects on drying performance. A quasi-two-dimensional vibrated spouted bed system was constructed, using irregularly shaped quartz sand as the drying medium. During the experiments, a high-speed camera was employed to capture particle flow images, and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was applied to analyze the particle velocity field, thereby quantifying flow field parameters such as dead zone area and spout deflection angle. Simultaneously, a relative humidity sensor was installed at the outlet to measure the temporal variation of relative humidity in the spouting gas throughout the drying process. The moisture ratio (Xfinal/Xinitial) was adopted as an overall index of drying performance, and, based on the outlet relative humidity and moisture ratio, the drying rate and total moisture removal were calculated. Three experimental parameters were systematically varied: dimensionless vibration intensity (Γ = 0-1.0), velocity ratio (U/Ums = 1.85, 2.35, and 2.85), and the initial moisture content of the quartz sand (Xinitial = 0-2.0%), in order to investigate their respective influences on the internal flow field structure and drying performance of the bed. The experimental results indicate that the flow field within the bed can be characterized by three distinct regions based on particle motion behavior: the spout region, the annulus (downflow) region, and the fountain region, with higher velocity ratios corresponding to enhanced particle mobility. In terms of flow field stability, both the dead zone area and the spout deflection angle increased with increasing initial moisture content, accompanied by a longer time required to reach a stable state. Conversely, increasing the velocity ratio or applying sufficiently strong vibration effectively reduced the dead zone area and suppressed spout deflection; however, excessively weak vibration intensity was found to enlarge the dead zone area instead, indicating that the vibration effect exhibits an optimal intensity range. With respect to drying performance, the moisture ratio of the quartz sand decreased with increasing vibration intensity and velocity ratio, indicating an improvement in overall drying performance.
