    Abstract: The self-organized spatiotemporal patterns through a transverse ionization instability in a medium pressure annular rf glow discharge similar to a reaction-diffusion system is investigated. The formation of traveling periodic patterns through the spontaneous symmetry breaking process, the transient bifurcation behavior with wave number selection, the particlelike behavior of ionization clumps, and the effects of surface defects and external magnetic field are reported.
