A numerical scheme based on the two-dimensional adaptive mesh generation technigue, incorporated with fragmental algorithm for finite element analysis, is proposed in this research for study of the behavior of fractured structure. Due to the solution technique accompanied with explicit time integration, it is not necessary to solve the nonlinear problems with any of the iterative procedures. The characteristics of the algorithm and the associated data structure constructed with explicit integration method is proved to well suit for use with h-r type adaptive grid generation technique. Also,we describe a general strategy we have found effective for both vectorization and parallelizing fragmentation simulations. Such simulations often have several computationally intensive parts, including finite element integration, detection of material contacts, and inter-element collision. Our strategy is to load-balance each of the signifcant computations independently with whatever balancing technique is most appropriate. The proposed algorithm based on vectorization and parallelizing should have useful applications in both the assessment of damage and the design of repair for fractured engineering structures.
