; The present study explores EFL university students’ literacy development and discourse practices in Internet-mediated communities. In particular, this project is aimed to describe their second language (L2) literacy and cultural experiences from both global and local practices of English use. Drawing upon sociocultural research, I propose a blended curriculum that includes face-to-face literacy apprenticeship and three-tier networked interaction: (1) intra-class individual asynchronous reading and writing in local networked environments; (2) asynchronous and synchronous collaborative writing, discussion, and communications in popular global Internet communities ; and (3) group participation in events and activities in open Internet communities. The primary sources of data in this study are students’ discourses and message exchanges documented in these language and cultural networked communities. Analyses of the text content and the interaction structures would help understand discourse practices in different Internet-mediated contexts. Another purpose of this study is to examine how discourse knowledge, especially lexical and social cohesion, can facilitate L2 literacy development. Analyses of discourse and linguistic data will be conducted to understand how students use lexical and social strategies to improve communicative competence. Still another purpose of this study is to elicit students’experiences learning English through the Internet as well as their perceptions and preferences of Internet-mediated language learning communities. For this part of the study, individual students will be asked to reflect on learning and talk about practices. Quantitative data also will be collected through online surveys delivered to students and will be statistically analyzed by computer software. In the end, I will interview a small group of learners to gather additional information or clarify unclear ideas.
