Abstract: 研究期間:10108~10207;Visual attention and visual working memory are the fundamental building blocks of human visual cognition. Attentinal control and orienting dictates which information would be ignored or processed, while visual working memory retains the processed information for future use. Our recent work has already established reliable paradigms that independently approach these topics (Chen et al., 2009; Muggelton et al., 2010; Tseng et al., 2010; Hsu et al., 2011; Tseng & Bridgeman, 2011; Tseng et al., submitted; Chang et al., in press). In this series of studies we plan to further investigate the natures of attentional control and working memory not only separately, but also holistically to better elucidate their interactions. Furthermore, to uncover the underlying neural mechanisms of these processes, we intend to incorporate and combine many neuroimaging and neuromodulation techniques such as fMRI, MRS, ERP, EEG, TMS, and tDCS to investigate the neural underpinnings of attentional control and VWM from different angles. The immediate aim of this series of experiments is two-fold. First, we aim to elucidate the natures of attentional control, orienting, and visual working memory, as well as how various aspects of attention may influence the quality and quantity of information held in visual working memory. Second, we strive to elucidate the neural mechanisms that are responsible for the behavioral observations described above. Our ultimate goal is to establish a theory that bridges the gap between attentional control and visual working memory, and apply such knowledge for clinical and learning purposes by developing reliable methods that enhances one’s attentional control and visual working memory.
