    Abstract:

Hakka popular music and the identity of young people
    Abstract
There are various Hakka popular music performances in Taiwan, many of which are adapted from traditional Hakka opera or influenced by the elements of western music. In recent years, Taiwanese Government has developed Hakka culture by holding singing contests and providing awards which can attract young people of different backgrounds. The government hopes that the younger generation can enjoy Hakka popular music as much as Western music.
Supported by the government, the music creators utilize opportunities provided by the officials to share their works with younger audience. However, statistical data of Hakka music showed that young people of 18 to 39 years old are still unfamiliar with this “special” local music. From 1997 until now, the researchers of Social Sciences have done many researches in the development of Hakka history, the way of classifications, market networks, and the types of music created. However, researches on audience preference and understanding have been lacking.
In this research, I will explore the influence of Hakka identity on young people who enjoy Hakka popular music and its effect on cognitive difference. I use three research directions to respond to my research: 1. To understand how the audience establish the habitus of the Hakka popular music and their cognitive difference. 2. What are the specific characteristics of the Hakka popular music?3. How does the Hakka popular music establish the identity of the generation of young people?
Keywords: Hakka popular music, younger generation, ethnic, cultural identity, cultural capital, habitus
