    摘要: 十九世紀初,在皇家藝術學院成立近半個世紀後,不僅以「英國畫派」為題的圖文集首度問 世,以十八世紀「英國老大師」為主角的展覽也陸續出現,顯示十九世紀英國社會對建立「英 國畫派」傳統的期望。風景畫不僅在當時也在往後被認為是英國畫派的強項,在1980 年代「新 藝術史」崛起時,十八世紀風景畫更是學界熱烈討論的焦點之一。 本計劃為期三年,探討十九世紀英國如何建構「英國畫派」傳統,尤其是十八世紀英國老大 師風景畫的發展與特色。第一年藉由分析十九世紀出版的英國繪畫史書籍、圖冊以及當時舉 辦的英國老大師繪畫展覽,爬梳「英國畫派」論述的發展。第二年探討十九世紀英國的藝術 出版與展覽如何呈現與談論十八世紀英國風景畫的發展與特色,建構出英國風景畫傳統。第 三年比較George Lambert、Richard Wilson、Thomas Gainsborough、Paul Sandby 等四位十八世 紀風景畫家在十九、二十世紀的評價變遷,藉此凸顯出在不同歷史時期「風景畫」概念與論 述的變動,回應「建構英國風景畫傳統」的問題。 國內外學界目前尚未有相關研究如本計劃一樣,全面性探討「英國畫派」,尤其是「英國風景 畫傳統」,在十九世紀的建構過程。本計劃研究成果,除了闡明「英國畫派」與「英國風景畫 傳統」論述建構的歷史環節,也將有助於釐清今日我們所認識的英國繪畫史(風景畫史)論 述的發展由來,具有反思「藝術史學史」的意義。 ;After almost fifty years of the establishment of the Royal Academy of Arts, the early nineteenth century saw the first appearance of publications promoting the achievements of the “English School” as well as exhibitions of eighteenth-century English Old Masters. This indicated that the English society was eager to see the formation of the English School tradition. The genre of landscape painting was then and has since been regarded as the strength of the English School; moreover, when the “New Art History” appeared in the 1980s, one of the topics under hot debate was eighteenth-century landscape painting. This is a three-year project, which aims to explore how the “English School” tradition, especially the development and characteristics of the eighteenth-century English landscape painting, was constructed in the nineteenth century. In the first year I will trace the development of the English School discourse by analyzing nineteenth-century art-historical writings, compendia of reproductive prints, and exhibitions of the Old Masters. In the second year I will explore how the development and characteristics of the eighteenth-century landscape painting were presented and discussed in the nineteenth-century publications and exhibitions so as to build the English landscape tradition. In the third year the evaluations of four eighteenth-century landscape painters – George Lambert, Richard Wilson, Thomas Gainsborough, and Paul Sandby – in the nineteenth-century will be compared, so as to examine the changing concepts and discourses of landscape painting in different historical periods, thus responding to the question of constructing the English landscape tradition. Currently there is no systematic research on the construction of the English School discourses and especially the English landscape tradition in the nineteenth century. In addition to expounding the historical context of the discursive formation of the English School and English landscape tradition, this project is also a reflection on art historiography, aiming to clarify how the history of English painting (landscape painting in particular) assumes its present-day form.
