;This paper primarily investigates how to enhance the ethical practice capabilities of contemporary Taiwanese military personnel through the philosophical principles of Stoicism from the ancient Greek and Roman era. Improved ethical practice capabilities not only entail demonstrating higher moral conduct but also require Taiwanese military personnel to achieve a balance within society, the military, and personally. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the Taiwanese military has frequently appeared unprepared and disappointing in facing rapidly shifting political orientations, media landscapes, and public opinion environments. Additionally, with the infiltration of diverse social values into citizenry consciousness, military personnel have begun to realize the need to manage their own lives apart from just "defending the nation" and "regarding the unit as family." These compounded factors often leave military personnel torn between social identity, military management, and self-expectations. Ethics is the study of discerning right from wrong and instructing individuals on how to lead a good life. However, when military personnel turn to military ethics for assistance and guidance, Taiwan′s military ethical framework still predominantly offers lofty moral doctrines with grand narratives. At such times, perhaps the Stoic philosophy, which focuses on confronting life′s adversities and emphasizes ethical practice, can provide assistance to military personnel.
This paper explores the integration of Stoic philosophy with military ethics, discussing how practicing Stoic philosophy can assist a soldier in becoming a better and more resilient warrior. It also incorporates Stoic ethical principles into the ethical dilemmas faced by Taiwanese military personnel, attempting to propose a path of thought to help soldiers clarify the attitudes they should adopt towards society, the military, and themselves, in order to find the way to "living well" and happiness.
